The Benefits of Hiring an Apprentice

by | Feb 1, 2024 | HR Resources

National Apprenticeship Week is the 5th – 11th Feb. The purpose of the week? To celebrate the value and opportunity apprenticeships provide. This year’s theme is “Skills for Life.” which discovers how apprenticeships can help individuals build the skills needed for a successful career and empower employers to cultivate a future-ready workforce.

As a business owner, it’s worth considering the positive impact hiring an apprentice can have on your organisation. If you’re considering taking on an apprentice, read on to find out more about why hiring an apprentice can be a great investment for your business.

  1. Increased Productivity

One of the main advantages of hiring an apprentice is the potential for increased productivity. As well as bringing fresh perspectives and a willingness to learn, apprentices can also help to lighten the workload of your existing staff. This is particularly true when it comes to the more time-consuming aspects of your business – by taking on an apprentice, you can free up valuable time for more experienced staff to focus on more complex tasks.

  1. Cost-Effective Workforce Development

When it comes to developing a skilled workforce, apprenticeships are a cost-effective solution. Unlike more traditional training methods, apprenticeships involve on-the-job training, meaning that your apprentice will be gaining valuable experience while contributing to your business. This contrasts with more expensive training courses, which can be time-consuming and often result in limited practical experience.

There are different rates of pay for apprentices depending on their age and what year of their apprenticeship they are in.

The Apprentice rate is £5.28 per hour

Apprentices are entitled to the Apprentice rate if they are under the age of 19 or 19 years and older and in their first year of Apprenticeship. An Apprentice over the age of 19 and having completed the first year of their Apprenticeship will revert to NMW for their age banding.

  1. Tailored Skillset

Another significant advantage of hiring an apprentice is the opportunity it provides to tailor the skillset of your workforce to meet your business’s specific needs. By hiring an apprentice, you can train them to perform tasks and develop skills that meet your company’s specific needs. This can be particularly beneficial if you’re looking to develop a particular area of your business, such as marketing or product development.

  1. Motivated and Loyal Employees

Taking on an apprentice can also help to develop motivated and loyal employees. By investing in an apprentice’s training and development, you’re sending a powerful message about your company’s commitment to its staff. This can be important in industries with high staff turnover, such as retail or hospitality, where employee engagement and motivation can be a significant challenge.

  1. Positive Impact on Company Culture

Hiring an apprentice can also contribute to a positive company culture. By investing in the next generation of your workforce, you’re demonstrating a commitment to developing talent and supporting the growth of young people. This sends a powerful message to both your staff and your customers, helping to build a reputation as an employer that values its employees and is committed to making a positive impact in its community.

National Apprenticeship Week represents the perfect opportunity for organisations to consider the benefits of hiring an apprentice. From increased productivity and cost-effective workforce development to the opportunity to tailor the skillset of your workforce, taking on an apprentice can bring a wide range of benefits to your business.

If you’re considering taking on an apprentice, it’s well worth exploring the various apprenticeship schemes available and finding the right scheme for your business’s needs.

With the right support and investment, an apprentice can develop into a highly skilled and motivated member of your team, helping to drive your business’s growth and success in the years to come.

There are certain legalities involving the hiring of an Apprentice such as ensuring 20% off the job training and a requirement to have an Apprenticeship Agreement in place.

As we had recently come up against some difficult staffing issues which we had not experienced before, Ellen Parkin at Spire HR was recommended to us by one of our business partners to guide and assist us with the complex HR legalities we needed to adhere to.

Ellen was very efficient and professional and gave us instant confidence that she would be able to competently provide the help we needed. Ellen was readily accessible via email or telephone throughout the whole process and gave us the vital lifeline we needed during a very emotive and stressful time. Spire HR realised that as an SME, we had to balance the commercial viability for HR consultancy with the expertise and guidance we needed and Ellen was open and honest from the outset, providing a cost-effective and professional service. I would therefore have no hesitation in recommending Spire HR to anyone.
